Statement of Need
In Southern Maine, access to youth sports is increasingly determined by a family’s financial circumstances rather than a child’s interest or ability. Rising costs—including registration fees, equipment, travel, and camps—create significant barriers for many households. These pressures are especially pronounced in York and Cumberland counties, where housing and living costs are among the highest in the state. As families prioritize essential expenses, extracurricular activities such as youth sports are often unaffordable, leaving many children sidelined.
Financial strain affects many families in the region. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, child poverty rates in York and Cumberland counties range from 8–11%, representing thousands of youth with limited financial resources. At the same time, nearly 30% of Maine households are classified as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), according to the United Way of Maine, meaning they earn above the federal poverty level but still struggle to afford basic necessities. These hidden hardships, combined with rising living costs, make youth sports participation a challenge for many families.
The cost of youth sports can be prohibitive, forcing parents to make difficult choices between essential needs and enrichment opportunities. As a result, many children in Southern Maine are unable to participate in organized sports—not due to lack of interest or ability, but because of cost. Without targeted financial support, this participation gap will continue to widen, limiting access to the physical, social, and developmental benefits of youth athletics.
Participation in youth sports is a critical pathway to healthy child development. Sports promote physical fitness, social skills, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience. This need is particularly urgent in Southern Maine, where, according to the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, only about one in four high school students meets the recommended daily level of physical activity. Accessible youth sports programs are essential to improving health outcomes and encouraging active lifestyles.
The Maine Youth Sports Opportunity Fund addresses this need by removing financial barriers. By providing assistance for registration fees and related expenses, the Fund ensures that children in Southern Maine can engage fully in sports regardless of family income. Expanding access promotes fairness, strengthens community connections, and supports healthier, more engaged youth.
When children are given the opportunity to play, they gain confidence, build relationships, and develop skills that extend far beyond the field. By ensuring that cost is never the reason a child is excluded, this initiative strengthens families, supports youth development, and fosters a more connected Southern Maine.
