To describe the humanities to someone outside of the area to start would be that there is no adequate idea of humanities. Instead of an idea of humanities it is more of a world of humanities that factor into a lot of things. Business people, politicians, and university administrators usually worry most about humanities because they are geared towards training students for the workplace and not distinguishing history. From the article What were the humanities, Anyways? It says, “We might say that the humanities are becoming a “meta-discipline.” But a concept of the humanities that transcends or overflows the established disciplines is a beast that has been vaguely denoted rather than concretely apprehended. I interpret this as humanities becoming less talked about then they really should be and that people tend to put them down.

Part 1:

I think learning the humanities personally really helps with critical thinking. I think this helps because it makes me look at things from a different perspective and open to hearing others perspectives on a topic. I think professionally I think I learn the value of learning what others have for an opinion and not just going with my own personal opinion. This is important because others around me in a professional setting might have a better opinion and it would help to be more open to learning new ways. In the article from Helen Small’s it talks about how defending the humanities. I agree with this because I think it is very important to defend humanites and be able to discuss them.

Part 2:

For my career goals I want to work in a field of business. I think the skills I have learned with taking both business classes as well as communication classes set me up for success with being able to adapt to the “Adult world”. The skills I have learned in classes with being able to submit work on deadlines will help me be able to work in fast pace environments. I mainly look for fast paced environments especially as an athlete I think it helps my skills translate to be able to work fast. Over the summer I did a business internship in sales which was very fast paced and I enjoy that kind of environment. Some of the tasks I performed during this internship, were doing cold calls this was a tough skill to pick up but I did learn it well. In the future I would like to get away from cold calls and get more into personal relationships with clients.

To build off of last week’s journal, my tests said I was a very good teammate and leader. I think this translates to my skills to be able to be an open learner and be able to listen to other opinions in both the classroom and the professional setting. With being a good leader I think it helps to translate into having a strong voice and being able to provide helpful feedback to others. I also think it gives me great skills to possibly be in a managerial position at some point in my future. Another test I had taken was on communication. The test results said I was a great communicator. I think this translates well because I am able to communicate with anyone and be able to take feedback on what I need to improve on. I think both of these test results were very accurate about me and I believe I will be able to use these skills professionally. I think these will be beneficial in the professional setting because I will be able to help others and be able to communicate to others effectively and efficiently with critical thinking.

Some of the projects I have pulled were videos and essays. Some of my most memorable work came from CMM-216 and CMM-290. Some of the videos created in this were most memorable to me. These were most memorable because I was finally able to learn proper editing techniques and be able to create better videos. Some of the things I am not as proud about are some of the essays I have written in the past. I think my skills have developed over the past few years so I am excited to go back in and revisit those. In these essays I notice how my grammar and punctuation is not very strong and some of the words I use could be better to develop a better story. I am excited to revisit some of these to be able to create a better story then what I have created in the past.

I think the strengths of my project was the story it set up. How ever the weaknesses of it are the grammar eras. I think of the parts I would need to mainly focus into would be grammar checks. I do like the proposal of #3 because it is short and to the point. Looking at these gives me a strong example of what to actually put on my proposal. What I intend to do is have somewhat of #3 but go a little more in depth with it but keep it to the point. My reasoning with following this plan is because I am doing something similar in a way where it is in a way a research paper but I am going back to rewrite a news article I have wrote. With me setting up the same as #3 I think it will help outline this project the best.

https://theconversation.com/academic-freedom-how-to-defend-the-very-condition-of-a-living-democracy-in-france-and-worldwide-267689

To summarize this article, there is academic freedom under pressure in democracies as well as authoritarian regimes. It argues that threats to academic freedom are no longer confined to authoritarian states: democratic countries are increasingly experiencing political, ideological and institutional pressures on researchers and educators. Why does academic freedom matter’s for democracy and innovation? Academic freedom is “the very condition of a living democracy.” Without the free flow of ideas, inquiry, critique and teaching, democracy and innovation both suffer. Overall I think this article shows why humanities can be in danger because of the threat of academic freedom.
