Chapter 3:
One interesting element I found was that Fader made sure to mention how students now should start their own substack meaning they need to use their own platform to try and pitch stories. For example reaching out to a news outlet and letting them know you will be at the game and would be willing to cover the game for them. This tactic does take a lot of extra work for yourself but it gets your name out there if the story is worth it. Another interesting thing I have learned in this chapter is the effect of AI. Fader thinks this could dramatically affect all levels of sports because of the impact it has on people’s lives. One thing she mentioned was about the Hollywood strike and someone’s sign saying “Your robot doesn’t have my trauma.” I think this resonates really well because it’s true a robot cannot make things sound human and heartfelt no matter what they do.
Chapter 4:
One thing I found interesting is the term Mojo’s referred to as mobile journalists. I think this is a really interesting term because a lot of journalists now, especially sports journalists, are always on the go. I think this is a relevant term because things in sports are always changing. For example in the pro’s there are always trades or even at the college level there are always big name players entering the transfer portal. Another thing I learned was the preparation for a story. Learning this was important to me because I feel like I miss parts of information sometimes so learning to prepare for things was big for me because I do not want to write out an article and have any wrong information. Especially in sports journalism even getting someone’s name spelled wrong could always be bad for you.
Question:
What impact could AI have on the future of Journalism?

Chapter 6:
In chapter 6 one of the things I found interesting was the seven news values. I found this interesting because they help reporters determine if the story is actually newsworthy. Without these values I think reporters would struggle because they might not have the story set up correctly to make it a big story. I found this interesting because I have struggled in the past with being able to capture stories that are actually newsworthy. I think reading this was beneficial to me because I was able to learn a more structured way on how to determine if it is newsworthy or not. Another thing I learned was when it talked about capturing the attention of the audience. I think this is interesting because it talks about quotes and how to use them properly. I found this interesting because in previous pieces I have written I had solid quotes but they just made no sense with where I put them. I think this will help me with being able to determine which quotes need to be in to grab a reader’s attention and which quotes should be left out so you do not lose the reader’s interests. I think these were both very interesting aspects because they will help me become a better writer for my future work. Learning the seven news values will help me determine what is and what is not newsworthy. And on top of that being able to capture the audience’s attention will help me actually have an interesting story to write.
One question I have is how do reporters take a non newsworthy story and find that actual story that people want to hear to create a newsworthy story?

chapter 7
I like how it talks about mistakes in sports and how they have consequences. I do also like how it talks about how those consequences apply to journalism. I think it is important to have these talked about because it can damage your credibility or even have you lose a job. I think this is important because many people look beyond this I feel like and usually end up not thinking about consequences it could have. I think it is important that it also talks about how you have to develop a sports terminology when writing in sports journalism. This is important to me because I sometimes forget to proofread my writing which I need to get better at.
Another thing I found interesting was sports columns. I found this interesting because I did not realize it was the most read part by readers. I found this interesting because I find myself going right to the sports columns. I like how writers for this can put their own perspectives while also writing to report. I think it is important to add the writer’s own perspective because it adds character to who the writer is and what they see on the inside.
One question I have is how do writers develop character in writing and be able to have their own personal perspectives without being biased.

Chapter 8:
One of the first things I found interesting about chapter 8 was proof reading. I think this is important because accuracy matters. This is interesting to me because something as small as even misspelling someone’s last name could ruin a writer’s credibility. The chapter talks about how the writer should proofread the article before it goes out to the copy editor. This can be challenging because if you are writing on deadline you get tired and things start to become sloppy. What I have found best was to walk away for a bit and come back to it and then proof read. Another thing I found interesting was coming up with headlines. I thought this was really interesting because I had always thought the reporter was responsible for creating a headline. Finding out that it’s either the copy editor or a page designer comes up with the headline. I like the example used in the chapter “Iba rejects job” which the editor did not like and it was changed to “Moe no go”. I thought this was interesting because it was more engaging than the first one. One question I have is how do you determine what is a good headline and what isn’t.
Bonus Journal:
I watched the Sunday night football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. The big story I picked up on that was a common theme of the game was Micah Parsons returning to his old facility as he was traded from the Cowboys to the Packers before the regular season had begun. This was talked about throughout the whole game and included some quotes from the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Some of the big plays came in overtime where the Packers almost lost the game with a ball thrown in the endzone going for the win that was incomplete. They got lucky that they had one second left on the clock and were able to kick a field goal to end the game in a tie. Another big play came from the Cowboys Dak Prescott who is their quarterback connecting with George Pickens on a 28 yard touchdown pass. This came after the Cowboys were able to drive 52 yards down the field in just 62 seconds. I think the commentators did a good job with play by play on the game and showing the Micah Parsons emotions from Jerry Jones. The one thing I had for comments was some of the word choices they would use, especially when talking about the Packers kicker Brandon McManus they would always say “good job” as if he is not a veteran kicker in the league.

Some of the things I will need to prepare for the game is knowing things about the opponent as well as knowing things about UNE field hockey. From what I do know Bates college is ranked. Some of the things I plan to do is being able to plan out who I want to talk to post-game and what kind of adjustments I would have to make after the game depending on the final result. Another thing I will have to do is learn some of the basic rules of field hockey as I am unfamiliar with the sport. I plan on reaching out to the Head coach to let her know I will be doing a story on the game.

Profile subjects:
Mike Perez (football)- I think he would make a great profile because he has faced many injuries in his playing career and has become a starter his senior year after being out for 2 years with different injuries.
Damian Jones (football)- Was named an all american at the end of last season. Would talk about how it felt for him and what kind of hard work it takes for him to earn that and how he felt earning that.
Sean Gherard (football)- Is a first year player that has earned playing time. I would talk about how it feels and the difference in play from high school to college football.

The sound of tape unrolling from a fresh roll is the only thing you can hear in the University of New England athletic training room.
Perez is usually one of the first people into the training room before a practice or a game. This is solely because of the injuries he has faced in his college career.
Mike Perez is in his fourth year at the UNE, but on the football field he is only a sophomore. This is because he has been sidelined with two severe injuries in the past years.
Just when Perez thought he would have a stellar sophomore year of football he suffered a torn ACL. This put him out the whole season and he worked hard and came back eager to work hard to get a starting spot. He was then faced with another injury, this time breaking his ulna in half. This ended up sidelining him for the rest of his junior year as well.
Perez in his fourth season with the team has been playing exceptionally well, as he was named a starter and has kept that spot throughout the season thus far.

Beyond the field-Mike Perez
By:Evan Glynos
The sound of tape unrolling from a fresh roll is the only thing you can hear in the University of New England athletic training room while athletes get ready for practice.
Perez is usually one of the first people into the training room before a practice or a game. This is solely because of the injuries he has faced in his college career.
“These injuries have tried to determine my playing ability and take me out of the sport” Perez stated.
Mike Perez of Peabody, MA, is in his fourth year at UNE, but on the football field he is only a sophomore. This is because he has been sidelined with two severe injuries in the past years that ended his season before they even started.
“Its tough to come back from two serious injuries like that but having my guys be there by my side made it easier on me and I was able to get the motivation to keep playing.” Perez recalled
Perez in his fourth season with the team has been playing exceptionally well, as he was named a starter and has kept that spot throughout the season thus far.
Off the field Perez is the example student athlete as an applied exercise science student withholding just barely shy of a 4.0 grade point average.
“I plan on attending med school next year… not sure what school just yet” Perez explained.
Perez has dreams of becoming an orthopedic surgeon to work on athletes who will face similar injuries that he has faced to be able to help them get back on the field promptly. Although becoming an orthopedic surgeon is a lot of extra school Perez is up for the challenge.
Perez is nearing the end of his senior football season, as he tries to keep playing to his best ability to stay in the run on earning all conference recognition. He has 42 tackles on the season which is lower than the rest of the conference players at his position, but others lack consistency where Perez has been consistent.
